Young person cognitive assessment
We offer comprehensive young person cognitive assessments as part of our neurodevelopmental services. These assessments are carried out by one of our experienced Clinical Psychologists and are tailored to help understand your young person’s learning profile, strengths, and areas where additional support may be helpful.
What is a cognitive assessment?
A cognitive assessment (sometimes referred to as an IQ test or psychological evaluation) explores how a child thinks, learns, and processes information. It provides insight into a range of cognitive functions, including:
- Verbal and non-verbal reasoning
- Working memory
- Processing speed
- Problem-solving skills
- Attention and focus
These assessments can be helpful in identifying specific learning needs, supporting educational planning, and informing diagnoses such as learning difficulties, giftedness, or neurodevelopmental conditions.
Who is it for?
Our cognitive assessments are suitable for children and young people aged 8 to 18 who may be:
- Struggling with aspects of learning or school performance
- Experiencing uneven progress across subjects
- Finding tasks particularly difficult or unusually easy
- Being considered for a neurodevelopmental assessment (e.g., autism or ADHD)
- In need of clearer understanding for school support plans or EHCPs
What’s involved?
The assessment process includes:
- A parent consultation to gather developmental and educational history
- Direct 1:1 cognitive testing with your child using standardised tools (e.g., WISC-V via Q-interactive)
- A detailed written report outlining results, interpretation, and tailored recommendations
- A feedback session to discuss findings and next steps
All assessments are delivered in a supportive, child-friendly environment, with a flexible and compassionate approach.
